Mysthea The Fall
After playing Mysthea and Icaion, we were pretty excited to also try out Mysthea The Fall. While Mysthea and Icaion are very competitive games, Mysthea The fall is a highly cooperative game. By combining components and rules from Mysthea and Icaion, this new game is created. If you haven’t played Mysthea and Icaion before, we highly recommend you do before starting Mysthea The Fall as the game will be easier to understand so you can enjoy the game faster. If you are curious what those games are or how to play them, check out our previous reviews. We had so much fun exploring this game. This is how it went!
How to Play.
Like I said before, Mysthea The Fall is created with components from Icaion and Mysthea, so in order to be able to play Mysthea The fall. You will need both Mysthea and Icaion. The rulebook of Mysthea The Fall shows you with pictures what you will need from the box of Icaion, and what you need from the box from Mysthea. As a piece of advice, choose what character you would like to play first per player, the only rule you need to follow for this is, if the first player chose a character from Mysthea, the next will have to choose from Icaion, the third has to choose from Mysthea again, and so on. This will help to bring the amount of components from mixed games on your table down. Unchosen characters can remain in their game boxes. For the rest of the setup, it’s the most easy to just follow every step in the rulebook and look closely at the setup picture. As you begin Mysthea The fall, you will have revealed some event cards, these need to be resolved first. You can read details about this in the night phase, or in short, at the back of the rulebook. Now you’re ready to begin.
Mysthea The Fall each round is played in two Phases, the day phase and night phase. These rounds will be repeated until you either win or lose the game. All players have to work together to gain victory, if you are defeated, all players lose. If you gain victory, all the players win. In the day phase on your turn, you can move, collect, deposit, attack enemies, attack a monster or you can investigate the Colossus. You may perform up to three actions on you turn and you can perform the same action multiple times. If you want to move, you can move between the nodes on the map, if this is your first action, you can move two nodes. Otherwise you move one node. If you come across another player or a fortification, you can move an extra node as you can’t stand on the same spot as another player, and a fortification buys you one extra movement. If you chose to collect, you collect one Qoam from each surrounding region with the corresponding color. you can hold on to six Qoams at the same time, if you get more, you have to discard down to six Qoam. You can also deposit. If you have any Qoam in your possession and stand on a node next to the city, you can place your Qoam on each of the free diamond spaces in the city. Each diamond can hold one Qoam which means the city can hold a maximum of five additional Qoams. Every player can use these Qoam as if they are part of their own reserve at any time. However, when an enemy manages to besiege the city, it will occupy one space. That space won’t be able to hold Qoam.
Your character can also attack enemies. To do this, you choose one region adjacent from your character. You can pay one Qoam of the region you are attacking to reveal an Era I command card. Ignore everything on that card except for the number in the upper left corner. Theses are your strength points. A golem takes two points to defeat and a troop or parasite takes one strength point each. Note that you have to defeat an entire region to make the attack successful, otherwise you will lose your action. If one card isn’t enough, you can pay one additional Qoam to reveal an Era II card, or pay three Qoam in total to reveal an Era I, II and III card. add all the numbers for your total strength point. The priority of the attack will always be: Golems – Troops – Parasite. That means if you get to choose to defeat an extra enemy because of a machine for example, the golem will go first. If defeated, place an island to put them back to. Don’t place them in the common pool. If after defeating the region you still have strength points left, you gain an eradication bonus which will give you a benefit like taking an additional Qoam, or defeating a troop of your choosing. If there is a monster on the board, you can choose to attack it. If your character is on a node adjacent to the island of the monster, you can resolve the attack. This works the same way as attacking a region. You will need the same amount of strength points as the monster or more to defeat it. If you are successful, you can place the monster back in the common pool. As a last action, you can investigate the Colossus, if your character is standing on the same node as the Colossus, you can take a primal shard from it’s base to reveal the value. To obtain that shard, you have to pay the Qoam of the two regions adjacent to the Colossus in the same number. For example, if the Colossus stands between the ocean and forest and you take a primal shard of two, you have to pay two green and two blue Qoam, otherwise your action will be lost. Don’t forget that you can always use the Qoam stored in the city as extra payment. After you have investigated the Colussus, place your character back onto a node on the city.
Once per turn, you can activate the machines of the same color as your character for free. Depending on what machine you choose, you can take one additional Qoam of the region of that machine, build a fortification on the node you stand on, or defeat an enemy of that region. This action is always for free and does not count as one of your three actions. The same goes for the special ability from each character and the relic of your character. You can even use your relic during another players turn. The special ability of your character and your relic, are found in the rulebook with more details.
Then comes the night phase. the night phase explains what you need to do with the event cards. A quick overview from this can also be found at the back of the rulebook. In the night phase depending on which card is revealed, troops are moved to inner regions or to the city, parasites are added, the Colossus could be on the move or monsters could spawn on the game board. if five different region cards are revealed, shuffle all the event cards back into the deck, place all the revealed primal shards back into the bag, and if there was no storm card revealed yet, all the relics can be recharged.
When there are three or more enemies in a region, they will attack the machines starting with the harvester. When the harvester is already removed from the game in that region, the next to go is the scavenger and after that the refiner. If there is no machine left, the city will lose five points.
To win the game, you will need to claim all the shards from the Colossus, but beware, every player must have claimed at least one shard. If this is not possible, you can place all the shards that are claimed back into the Colossus. You will lose the game if the city defense will drop to zero (you start with 99 points) , if five enemies besiege the city, if an island has no enemies left or when all the machines of one color are destroyed. Teamwork and good communication is necessary to win this game and time if of the essence.
Playtrough of the game.
We started this game with not really any idea of how it would look like, especially since we knew Mysthea and Icaion were competitive and this was cooperation. But Mysthea The Fall is an amazing game and we give big props to Tabula games for designing this. They have created an entirely new game, from two bigger games. That means you can buy three games, for the price of two and you even need less space in your cabinet.
Mysthea The Fall is pretty difficult and good communication is key to defeat the Colossus. We had to play it multiple times and only because of luck and a good combination of characters we were able to beat it the third time we played this game. We were lucky enough to not draw a storm card, only one Colossus card and no monsters card on the event deck which meant we had more time and weren’t losing to many city points because of enemy attacks. Our characters had special ability’s and relics that worked really well together as Tomasz played with Telron who could see the next event card that would be revealed and I who played ‘the creature’ who could move other players extra on my turn. We could also move the Colossus to other nodes.
We did find out that the game is also way harder to beat if you play it with more people. Not necessarily because of bad communication, but more because every player has to have claimed at least one primal shard of the Colossus to win. That means, if you make a mistake, you have to start all over again while time is really important in this game.
Thinking ahead and planning your strategy is key in Mysthea The Fall.
Mysthea The Fall is an excellent thought trough game made from Icaion as well as Mysthea. Keep in mind that in order to be able to play this game, you will need those two titles as Mysthea The Fall uses components from both games. Mysthea The Fall is a heavy strategic territorial defense game where communication and working together is key in order to win. It might take some practice to beat the game. With all the amazing miniatures used, it really brightens up your table and the game will look really good and colorful from the start. We do recommend to play Icaion and Mysthea before you start Mysthea The fall as this will make it easier to understand the rules which will let you start the game faster and have fun.
